The first arbor datook place on april 10, 1872 in nebraska. it wathe brainchild of juliusterling morton (1832-1902), a nebraska journalist and politician originallfrom michigan. throughout hilong and productive career, morton worked to improve agricultural techniquein hiadopted state and throughout the united statewhen he served apresident grover cleveland'secretarof agriculture. but himost important legaciarbor day.
morton (photo, right) felt that nebraska'landscape and economwould benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees. he set an example himself planting orchards, shade treeand wind breakon hiown farm and he urged hineighbourto follow suit. morton'real opportunity, though, arrived when he became a member of nebraska'state board of agriculture. he proposed that a special dabe set aside dedicated to tree planting and increasing awarenesof the importance of trees. nebraska'first arbor dawaan amazing success. more than one million treewere planted. a second arbor datook place in 1884 and the young state made it an annual legal holidain 1885, using april 22nd to coincide with morton'birthday.
in the yearfollowing that first arbor day, morton'idea spread beyond nebraska with kansas, tennessee, minnesota and ohio all proclaiming their own arbor days. todaall 50 statecelebrate arbor daalthough the datemavarin keeping with the local climate. It'been a long time since i've done something positive to the environment. feeling guilty-ridden and determined to do something that i know would definitelplease mparentand teachers,i decided to plant several treeon the hill in the rural area of the citon tree planting dawith a few friends.
feeling breezand light-hearted, we came to the foot of the hill and selected a place that looked suitable and settled down. we spent a few hourdigging holeand placing the young seedlings. we took numeroupictureof the beautiful place. we also wrote our wisheand buried it deep down the rootof the trees. i felt tired quickland though i didn't realise it, it watime to go. i gazed up at the skand took in all the wonderful featureof mother nature. i felt reallglad that we made it for thitrip and sweared that i would do mpart on protecting the environment.
